Tottenham Hotspur will aim to continue their flawless Europa League campaign as they travel to Istanbul on Thursday to face Galatasaray, a team led by Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen. The 25-year-old joined the Turkish club on a loan deal in September after falling out of favour at Napoli, where he had been part of their historic 2023 Serie A title win.
Despite Napoli's disappointing defense of their title and the arrival of Antonio Conte as head coach, Osimhen’s high release clause of €130 million ($142 million) kept potential suitors at bay. As a result, he moved to Galatasaray for the season without an option for a permanent transfer at the end of it.
While Osimhen’s future remains uncertain, he is focused on making the most of his time in Turkey, trying to contribute to his new side’s success. Galatasaray’s journey in Europe took a detour when they failed to qualify for the Champions League after a loss to Young Boys in the qualification rounds, leaving them to compete in the Europa League.
Osimhen has been part of their European fixtures, starting in home victories over PAOK and Elfsborg, although he missed an away draw against RFS due to injury. Despite his efforts, he has yet to score in European competition, with Mauro Icardi taking center stage as the team’s leading scorer.
In domestic action, Osimhen has been in fine form, scoring four goals in his last three Turkish Super League matches, including a match-winning header against Besiktas. His passionate celebration of that goal, which involved removing his protective mask and celebrating with a fist pump, indicated his growing commitment to Galatasaray.
The forward has also partnered with Icardi in attack, though he took on a solo role during the Istanbul derby against Fenerbahce, which Galatasaray won 3-1. The victory over their rivals proved to be another highlight of Osimhen’s season, showing his ability to perform under pressure.
The upcoming match against Tottenham is set to be a major test for Osimhen and his teammates. A win would see Galatasaray leapfrog Spurs in the Europa League standings, adding extra motivation for the Turkish champions. In addition to Osimhen and Icardi, the Galatasaray squad boasts other notable players like Dries Mertens, Michy Batshuayi, and former Spurs defender Davinson Sanchez, further strengthening their challenge in the competition. This match promises to be the toughest test for Spurs so far in the season’s Europa League campaign.
Tottenham’s manager, Ange Postecoglou, will be wary of the threats posed by a well-rounded Galatasaray team, especially with Osimhen in form and the backing of their passionate fans. As both teams prepare for what promises to be an intense encounter, the outcome could have significant implications for their progression in the tournament.
