Anthony Michael, a player in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) with Niger Tornadoes, has raised concerns over his financial struggles following what he describes as the “illegal” termination of his contract. The midfielder claims the Minna-based club has failed to pay his wages for two months despite his repeated appeals for settlement.
According to Michael, his contract was unexpectedly terminated in December 2024, just a month after his wedding. He stated that the club abruptly informed him that he was no longer needed, leaving him without a source of income. This sudden decision has put him and his family in a difficult situation.
The player revealed that the NPFL had intervened in the matter, directing Niger Tornadoes to pay him N1.3 million in compensation. However, he alleges that the club has ignored this directive and continues to withhold his earnings, forcing him to seek public attention for justice.
Michael expressed his distress over the situation, stating that he has endured months of hardship in silence. He lamented that providing for his pregnant wife has become a struggle, and he is now unable to support his younger siblings’ education. Additionally, his rent is overdue, and his elderly father’s deteriorating health has worsened due to the lack of funds for medical care.
A source within the NPFL disclosed that the league is relying on deducting the compensation from the club’s earnings, but this may not happen until the end of the season. This delay further complicates Michael’s financial situation, leaving him uncertain about when he will receive his dues.
Despite efforts to reach out to Niger Tornadoes for clarification, no official has publicly addressed the matter. When contacted, an anonymous club representative stated that the management was handling all player welfare-related issues but refused to provide further details.
Michael’s case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by footballers regarding contract disputes and unpaid wages in Nigerian football. His plea for assistance underscores the need for stronger enforcement of player rights and contractual obligations in the NPFL.
