Niger Tornadoes faced a tough challenge from the visiting former champions, Rivers United, but managed to secure a crucial and record-breaking home victory against the last remaining Nigerian representatives in continental competitions.
Hamza Abara's team started the game at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna on a strong note. Dazzling winger Sadiq Isyaka earned a penalty for the hosts in the 7th minute when he was fouled by a Rivers United player while attempting to make his way towards the goal.
The referee correctly identified the foul and awarded a penalty. Bashir Usman stepped up and confidently placed the ball beyond the reach of Rivers United's goalkeeper, Akande Abiodun.
Despite going behind, the visitors quickly recovered from their slow start and launched several attacks in search of an equalizer. However, the Tornadoes' defense remained resolute and managed to maintain their lead until halftime.
In the second half, Rivers United came out with renewed energy and determination to find a goal. They posed a constant threat, especially through Nyima Nwagua, but Tornadoes' Cameroonian import, Silvester Bell, matched their efforts.
Hamza Abara and his coaching staff made some strategic changes, bringing in Mohammed Hussain and Clinton Jephta, who quickly made an impact as the hosts seized control of the game.
In the closing minutes of the match, Bashir Usman had two excellent opportunities, first on the 85th minute and then on the 88th minute, to extend the lead but narrowly missed both chances. Akande Abiodun, the visitors' goalkeeper, made an outstanding save to keep the scoreline intact.
Shortly after, the referee blew the final whistle, securing Tornadoes' first victory against Rivers United in four years in any competition. This win also marked their first home victory in three NPFL seasons for the Ikon Allah Boys.
The club's Chairman, Engr. Ibrahim Dada, fulfilled his pledge of a N500,000 match bonus as part of his motivation to the players.
Niger Tornadoes player, Hamza Abdul'azeez Abarah, expressed his thoughts on the victory, stating, "It was a significant win for us and a reward for our hard work. After the defeat to Abia Warriors in the first match, we had sleepless nights and came to Kaduna to strategize for today's game."
He acknowledged the strength of Rivers United as a strong continental team and emphasized the importance of discipline and tactical focus in securing the win. Despite missed opportunities, he expressed satisfaction with the victory and looked ahead to the next game.
