Top 10: Lookman, Akanbi shine; Osimhen ranks sixth

Posted : 21 April 2025

From Eastern Europe to the Italian Serie A, and across the Atlantic to the United States, Nigerian footballers showcased their talents with a mix of goals, assists, and standout performances this past weekend. It was another round of excitement as players from Nigeria continued to shine in leagues around the world.

Whether it was netting decisive goals or producing moments of brilliance, Nigerian stars showed why they’re grabbing headlines and keeping fans and scouts glued to their performances. Several names impressed, but a few stole the spotlight with displays that could shape their teams’ seasons.

Rasheed Akanbi marked a return to form in Moldova, grabbing a sharp brace for Sheriff Tiraspol in a 4-0 win. That took his league tally to seven goals from 15 matches. Over in Belgium, Raphael Onyedika helped Club Brugge dominate Gent with a 5-0 away win that saw them reclaim the league summit.

Meanwhile, Rafiu Durosinmi’s attacking instincts were on full display in the Czech Republic as he scored in Viktoria Plzen’s 4-2 comeback victory. In Italy, Faustino Anjorin made a memorable impact off the bench for Empoli, scoring a late equalizer to earn a point against Venezia—his maiden Serie A goal.

Victor Osimhen, despite not scoring, played a key role in Galatasaray’s 2-0 triumph, firing nine shots and causing constant problems for the opposition. Alex Iwobi was on the scoresheet again for Fulham, taking his personal tally to a career-best nine goals in the Premier League, despite a narrow loss to Chelsea.

In Serie A, Ademola Lookman was instrumental in Atalanta’s win at the San Siro, providing the assist that secured all three points. Umar Sadiq kept Valencia moving away from the relegation battle with a late equalizer. Across the Atlantic, Gift Monday made headlines by scoring the only goal in Washington Spirit’s win over Orlando Pride—her first in the NWSL.

Topping the list was Chukwubuikem Ikwuemesi, who delivered a sensational display for OH Leuven in Belgium. With two goals and an assist in a thrilling 4-4 draw, he earned a near-perfect performance rating. Honourable mentions include Odeni Jamabo’s brace in Iraq, Adeshina Ayodele’s double for Lille II, and Abdulrahman Taiwo’s goal plus assist for Riga FC.
