Titanic battle in Kano as Sai Mai Gida faces Katsina United in Northern derby

The ancient city of Kano will come alive on Saturday as visiting Katsina United FC will come knocking at their door for the Super Saturday fixture otherwise known as Northwestern derby.

Fortunately, both clubs are elite league returnee as the both gained promotion to play in the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) from the lower league.

For the records, four-times league champions, Kano Pillars FC seems to have the upper hand, yet, matches between both clubs are hardly ends without a drama as both clubs have at one time or other punished over crowd control.

Kano Pillars FC on the Match Day 1 was beaten in Akure by Sunshine Stars FC and will want to avoid a drop at home against their familiar foe, Katsina United when they meet at Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano.

More importantly, the fierce match against the Changi Boys will  their first top-flight game at home since the final day of the 2021/22 season when they were relegated to lower league.

The head-to-head might look close but Kano Pillars know how to win at home. 

The Sai Masu Gida have won all past four meetings at home and Katsina United have only scored once against Pillars away from home. Coach Abdu Maikaba will be desperate to get his side going on Saturday and that should be the case after 90 minutes.
