Tight LaLiga Title Race Heats Up with Lewandowski, Mbappé Leading the Charge

Posted : 04 April 2025

The LaLiga title race is incredibly tight, with only three points separating leaders Barcelona from second-place Real Madrid. The battle between the two clubs is equally fierce up front, as Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski leads the division's goal-scoring chart with 25 goals, while Madrid's Kylian Mbappé follows closely behind with 22 goals. This dynamic adds an exciting layer to the ongoing competition for supremacy in Spain.

This weekend, Barcelona will face Real Betis, who are sixth in the table, while Madrid will host Valencia, who are battling relegation. The teams are heading into their respective fixtures with both clubs in strong form.

Last weekend, Mbappé netted a brace in Madrid's narrow 3-2 win over Leganés, while Lewandowski responded with two goals in Barcelona's dominant 4-1 victory over Girona. However, Lewandowski noted that his team could have scored even more, reflecting on missed opportunities in the dying minutes of the game.

Despite being 36 years old, Lewandowski has been in sensational form, scoring nine goals in his last nine league games and totaling 38 goals in all competitions this season. He maintains that his age is not a limitation, as he feels physically fit and capable of continuing at the highest level.

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick praised Lewandowski's commitment to team success, emphasizing that his focus remains on helping the team rather than individual accolades, even as he vies for the prestigious "Pichichi" award as LaLiga’s top scorer.

Meanwhile, Mbappé continues to impress with his own remarkable goal-scoring feats, having scored 33 goals in 46 games this season. The French forward recently matched Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal tally during his first season at Madrid, which Mbappé described as a "very special" achievement.

Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has suggested that Mbappé could eventually become a club legend, drawing comparisons with Ronaldo, who became Madrid’s all-time top scorer. With Valencia's defense depleted, Mbappé has a strong chance to add to his tally and maintain his lead in the 2025 goal-scoring race, where he currently leads Lewandowski by five goals.
