Thomas Tuchel will officially begin his tenure as England's manager by attending Tottenham's Premier League clash with Newcastle this Saturday. Appointed in October as Gareth Southgate’s successor, Tuchel formally stepped into the role on January 1. His visit to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will allow him to assess key players, including Tottenham’s James Maddison and Newcastle’s Dominic Solanke, Anthony Gordon, and Lewis Hall.
The German tactician, accompanied by assistant Anthony Barry, plans to observe several Premier League fixtures over the weekend as part of his preparation for England’s World Cup qualifying campaign. Next week, Tuchel and his team will visit the national training base at St. George’s Park for the first time to conduct introductory meetings with staff. He also intends to connect with England Under-21 coach Lee Carsley, who temporarily led the senior team during the Nations League earlier this season.
Tuchel’s backroom staff includes Henrique Hilario as goalkeeping coach, a role he held at Chelsea since 2016. Nicolas Mayer, who previously worked with Tuchel at Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, will serve as his performance coach, while analyst James Melbourne is also part of the team. The appointments underscore Tuchel’s focus on building a cohesive and experienced coaching unit.
The 51-year-old’s first matches at the helm will be World Cup qualifiers against Albania on March 21 and Latvia on March 24, both at Wembley. England’s Group K also features Serbia and Andorra. Tuchel will aim to guide England to their first major title since the 1966 World Cup, following Southgate’s near-misses, including a European Championship final loss to Spain last summer.
