Thomas Müller starred for Bayern Munich with two goals in three minutes during the first half, leading the team to a 4-0 victory over second-division Ulm in the German Cup on Friday. This match marked Bayern’s first competitive game under new coach Vincent Kompany. Müller's first goal came from a Joshua Kimmich pass after just 12 minutes, and he quickly added another by converting a Serge Gnabry cross.
The second half saw further goals from Bayern as Harry Kane and Kingsley Coman both found the net. Coman scored with an assist from new signing Michael Olise with 11 minutes left, and Kane sealed the victory with a goal in injury time, marking his first goal in the German Cup.
Bayern Munich, the most successful club in the competition with 20 German Cup titles, has struggled to advance past the quarterfinals since their treble-winning season in 2019-20. Last season's trophyless campaign, their first since 2012, prompted the club to hire Kompany in hopes of a turnaround.
Earlier in the day, first-division teams Mainz, St. Pauli, and Hoffenheim all overcame lower league opposition to advance past the German Cup's first round, despite facing initial setbacks.
Defending German Cup champions Bayer Leverkusen, who also clinched last year’s league title, are set to face Stuttgart in the DFL Supercup on Saturday night. Meanwhile, Ulm, who achieved promotion to the second division this summer after 23 years, faced a tough challenge against Bayern.
