Thierry Henry reflects on managerial inspirations ahead of France U-21's competitive debut

Posted : 11 September 2023
Thierry Henry, the new manager of France's U-21 side, has expressed his managerial inspirations ahead of their first competitive game. He highlighted Arsene Wenger and Pep Guardiola as key influences. Henry is set to lead the team into the Paris 2024 Olympics and the European U-21 Championship in 2025, starting with a match against Slovenia on September 11.

Henry, who had a storied career as a player with Arsenal and Barcelona, credited Guardiola with opening his eyes to a new style of football during his time at Barcelona. Guardiola took over as Barcelona's head coach, and Henry's experience under him transformed his understanding of the game.

Henry emphasized that being a manager involves making players more intelligent and helping them understand football better. He shared how both Wenger and Guardiola played pivotal roles in his development as a manager. Wenger, during his time at Arsenal, expanded Henry's knowledge, and Guardiola further deepened his understanding of pressing and other aspects of the game.

Henry's appointment as the France U-21 manager came in August, and he is preparing the team for the upcoming 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Their first competitive match saw them defeat Denmark 4-1 in a friendly as they gear up for the European U-21 Championship qualifiers, starting with a match against Slovenia on September 11.
