Juventus fans have faced challenging years recently, but new manager Thiago Motta is determined to restore the club's success and reputation both domestically and internationally. After finishing third behind Inter Milan and AC Milan last season, Juventus secured their return to the Champions League after a year's absence.
However, Motta's primary objective is to reclaim the Serie A title, which the club has not won in four years, following their nine consecutive championships between 2012 and 2020.
Motta, 41, has already made a name for himself with a successful two-year tenure at Bologna, where he led the team to qualify for Europe's elite club competition for the first time in six decades.
Now, he is focused on closing the gap with Juventus's Milanese rivals and reigniting the passion of the fans. In his first press conference as Juventus coach, Motta emphasized his desire to see a proud and happy team after every match, reflecting the best efforts of his players.
Off-field issues have also plagued Juventus, contributing to their struggles on the pitch. Their 2022-23 season ended on a sour note with another financial scandal, resulting in a 10-point deduction that saw them finish seventh.
Despite challenging Inter Milan early last season, Juventus's form declined after January, and their title hopes faded. Following the departure of long-time coach Massimiliano Allegri, who left the club after eight years and two spells, Juventus is now looking to rebuild under Motta's guidance.
Motta's strategy involves significant activity in the transfer market to forge a new identity for the team. Several of Allegri's preferred players, including Alex Sandro, Adrien Rabiot, Samuel Iling-Junior, and Moise Kean, have left the club. Motta aims to build a versatile and dynamic midfield, with new signings like Douglas Luiz from Aston Villa and Khephren Thuram from Nice.
The midfield will also be bolstered by the return of Nicolo Fagioli from a ban and the expected arrival of Teun Koopmeiners from Atalanta. Additionally, Juventus has acquired a new goalkeeper in Michele Di Gregorio, and Argentina winger Nico Gonzalez is expected to join before the transfer window closes. Juventus will kick off their Serie A campaign at home against Como on August 19.
