Theo Walcott pleased Okoduwa, 15, in Wolves squad against Arsenal

Posted : 22 April 2024

Former Gunners star Theo Walcott expressed his joy seeing Wesley Okoduwa named in Wolverhampton Wanderers' squad for their Premier League clash against Arsenal, highlighting the significance of the 15-year-old's potential debut.

Despite his young age, Okoduwa, son of former Super Eagles striker Emmanuel Okoduwa, was on the brink of becoming the youngest player to represent Wolves in the Premier League had he featured in the match.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil faced an injury crisis, leading him to include five teenagers in the matchday squad, including Okoduwa and Temple Ojinnaka, both of whom are eligible to represent Nigeria.

Walcott, who made headlines himself as the youngest player to represent England, understands the pressure and excitement surrounding young talents like Okoduwa, drawing from his own experience of breaking into professional football at a young age.

Reflecting on Okoduwa's inclusion, Walcott acknowledged Wolves' progress under O'Neil and expressed his anticipation to witness the 15-year-old's potential debut, reminiscing about his own fearless approach when he burst onto the scene.

Wolverhampton Wanderers face a challenge in retaining Okoduwa's services, with interest from clubs like Manchester United monitoring the Anglo-Nigerian defender ahead of the next season, as his schoolboy registration expires on June 30, 2024.
