Posted : 18 August 2023
Theo Walcott, aged 34, has officially announced his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a remarkable 23-year career. The former Arsenal, Everton, and Southampton winger shared this decision during a conversation with Gary Neville on The Overlap podcast. While acknowledging that the prospect is "scary," Walcott expressed his desire to explore new opportunities beyond the world of football.
Walcott's retirement follows a distinguished career that spanned 397 Premier League appearances over 13 years. During his time at Arsenal, he secured three FA Cups and two Community Shields. His rise to prominence began in 2006 when, at just 17 years old, he was surprisingly selected for Sven Goran Eriksson's England World Cup squad.
With 47 appearances and eight goals for England, Walcott enjoyed a successful international career spanning a decade. However, he has now decided to step away from playing despite receiving offers from various clubs, including overseas and prominent Championship teams. Walcott explained that his heart is not fully committed to continuing his playing career, making it unfair to both the clubs and himself.
Reflecting on his journey, Walcott shared, "It's very scary, I can't lie. It's scary because football's all I've known from the age of 16 or even younger. I want to try new things I never experienced as a kid - I missed out on a lot. I just feel like I want to experience life - things [usually] revolve around football for me."
Walcott's football journey began at Newbury and Swindon Town as a youth player before he joined Southampton in 2000. He made his debut for the Saints in 2005 as a 16-year-old and quickly made history by becoming the youngest goal scorer in the club's record books.
His move to Arsenal in 2006 marked the start of a significant chapter in his career. Playing 397 games for the Gunners, Walcott scored 108 goals. His career also included a stint at Everton, where he played 85 games and found the net 11 times. Ultimately, Walcott returned to Southampton two years later, capping off an impressive and memorable journey in the world of professional football.
