In the weekend matchup between two of Africa's greatest players, Riyad Mahrez decisively defeated Mohamed Salah to set a new record for assists in the Premier League, while Jordan Ayew contributed in an unnoticed way to Crystal Palace's thrilling comeback victory over Leicester City.
Victor Osimhen, a Super Eagles teammate, might miss some time due to injury, while Terem Moffi is rapidly catching up to Kylian Mbappe in the battle for the Ligue 1 Golden Boot.
In the biggest game of the weekend, Manchester City, who is still vying for the Premier League championship, thrashed their former title rivals Liverpool in a novel way.
Salah gave the visitors the lead in the 17th minute, but the Sky Blues responded brutally to come back and win 4-1. Neither City nor Liverpool may be nearly the power they once were.
After the break, City seized the lead thanks in large part to him. He picked up a clever pass from Alvarez and crossed for Kevin De Bruyne to score past a helpless Alisson. Mahrez overtaken Didier Drogba as the African player with the most assists in the Premier League with his fifth assist of the year and 56th overall.
Mahrez, who generated a game-high six scoring opportunities and could have scored the equalizer himself but missed the target shortly after Salah gave the Reds the lead, is second only to Leandro Trossard in the Premier League this season in terms of assists.
In particular, Mahrez's surge infield from the right wing before the half-hour mark placed Liverpool's defense on the back foot. He finished the game with a carry distance of 430 meters, the greatest in the league. Mahrez's dribbling was also exceptional.
