Ten-Man Colombia Defeats Uruguay to Reach Copa America Final After 23 Years

Posted : 11 July 2024

Ten-man Colombia triumphed over Uruguay with a 1-0 victory, advancing to the Copa America final for the first time in 23 years after a tumultuous semifinal on Wednesday. Jefferson Lerma's header in the 39th minute secured the win for the Colombians, setting up a clash with defending champions Argentina in Miami on Sunday. The match, held in front of a fervent crowd, ended with on-field scuffles and fighting in the stands, including players climbing among supporters amid the chaos.

Despite Daniel Munoz's ejection just before halftime and enduring substantial pressure from Uruguay, Colombia managed to hold on for a memorable win, much to the delight of their large fan base. The streets of downtown North Carolina were filled with partying fans in bright yellow jerseys well before kickoff. Inside the 74,800-capacity Bank of America Stadium, it felt like a home game for Colombia, with only small pockets of Uruguayan supporters breaking up the sea of yellow.

Colombia started the game strongly, with Liverpool winger Luis Diaz creating space on the left and finding Munoz at the back post, though the header was off target. Uruguay, known for their counter-attacking prowess, saw Darwin Nunez come close on several occasions, but his efforts were ultimately wide of the mark. Colombia capitalized on a turnover, with James Rodriguez delivering a perfect cross, but Jhon Cordoba's header missed the target.

The decisive moment came when Lerma outjumped Jose Maria Gimenez to head home Rodriguez's corner, marking Rodriguez's sixth assist of the tournament and breaking the record for most assists in a single Copa. Munoz, having been influential in the first half, received a second yellow card for an elbow on Manuel Ugarte just before the break, leaving Colombia to defend their lead with ten men for the entire second half. Despite Uruguay's growing pressure, including near misses from Nicolas de la Cruz and Luis Suarez, Colombia's defense held firm, and the match ended with Colombia securing their place in the final.
