Team USA athletes dissed the national anthem, which infuriated many

The U.S. women's soccer team stirred controversy once again on Thursday morning as more than half of the players refused to sing the national anthem before their Women's World Cup group stage match against the Netherlands.
The players' decision was a peaceful protest against what they perceive as discriminatory treatment of women and the LGBT community in the country.
During the first two games of the tournament, six first-team players - Andy Sullivan, Sophia Smith, Naomi Girma, Emily Fox, Trinity Rodman, and Crystal Dunn - remained silent during the national anthem.
This happened in their 0-3 victory over Vietnam and their 1-1 draw against the Netherlands, a rematch of the 2019 World Cup final.
The players' protest quickly went viral on social media, where some commentators criticized them for a perceived lack of patriotism and questioned why they don't represent another country.
Politician Nikki Haley, a member of the Republican Party, stated after the Vietnam protest that they should remember they were born in the freest and fairest country in the world. On the other hand, tennis legend Martina Navratilova defended the players, urging people to focus on finding solutions instead of creating problems.
The U.S. women's team has a history of breaking conventions and advocating for equal pay. In 2022, they achieved a milestone when they reached a settlement to end their class action lawsuit against the U.S. Soccer Association for equal pay, mirroring the men's team.
Additionally, the team has been vocal in protesting against the Donald Trump regime and what they perceive as discriminatory treatment of women and the LGBT community.
Megan Rapinoe, the team's star player, had a public feud with Trump and refused to attend the White House. She previously stated that she would never sing the American anthem again.
In their recent match against the Netherlands, the world champions drew 1-1 in the group stage. The Dutch took the lead in the 17th minute with a goal from Jill Roord, which was the only shot on target for their team throughout the match.
The Americans equalized in the 62nd minute with a goal from Lindsey Horan, but despite their 17 goal attempts compared to the Dutch's four, they couldn't secure the win.
After the game, Lindsey Horan expressed her desire to score and praised the Netherlands as a competitive team capable of achieving special things in the tournament.
