Team updates: Nwabali's status determined Wednesday; Troost-Ekong, Osimhen resume training today

Posted : 30 January 2024

The Super Eagles have initiated their preparations for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal clash against Angola. This follows a recovery session held on Monday, just two days after their impressive victory over the Indomitable Lions.

In adherence to the customary routine, players who featured in the majority of the game against Cameroon engaged in light exercises. Meanwhile, those who either had minimal playing time or didn't play at all participated in a full training session at the Ecole Nationale de la Police.

A notable absentee from the training was Stanley Nwabali, who is currently racing against time to regain fitness for the match against Angola. The Chippa United goalkeeper sustained a knee injury and was stretchered off the field during the encounter with Cameroon after a collision with their number 10, Georges-Kevin N'Koudou. Nwabali underwent tests to assess the extent of his injury and was seen walking around the pitch alone while others participated in more strenuous activities. Manager Jose Peseiro will make a decision on his inclusion in the matchday squad by Wednesday.

Central defender William Troost-Ekong and striker Victor Osimhen opted for rest during yesterday's training session following the physically demanding game against Cameroon. Despite some sensational reports suggesting their doubtful status for the upcoming clash against Palancas Negras, the official stance assures fans that there is no need for concern. Troost-Ekong and Osimhen are expected to resume full training on Tuesday, January 30.
