Former Super Eagles player Taye Taiwo recently emerged alongside French President Emmanuel Macron at a charitable soccer event.
Taiwo, a former defender for the Super Eagles, commenced his international journey with the Nigeria U-20 squad at the FIFA World Youth Championship and concluded his tenure with the national team in 2012. However, he resurfaced on Wednesday, participating in a charity match organized by the foundation of France's First Lady.
This charitable endeavor aimed to generate funds for hospitalized children and adolescents. Taiwo shared the field with other football icons, notably former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba and Real Madrid's Eden Hazard. Notably, President Macron actively participated in the match, exhibiting his football prowess and even netting a goal.
The appearance of the Nigerian forward was a rare spectacle, stirring curiosity among fans who had pondered his activities in recent years. Taiwo had retreated from the public eye following a period of prominence, particularly during his tenure in France.
Despite the absence of an official retirement announcement, the 39-year-old has remained absent from professional football for nearly two years. His last recorded match was with the Finnish club Salon Palloilijat, from which he was released in June 2022.
