Tammy Abraham’s Last-Minute Goal Secures Italian Super Cup for AC Milan

Posted : 07 January 2025

AC Milan completed a remarkable comeback to win the Italian Super Cup with a 3-2 victory over city rivals Inter Milan in a thrilling final in Riyadh on Monday. Tammy Abraham's added-time goal sealed the win, overturning a two-goal deficit after Inter had taken control early in the match. The victory denied Inter a record fourth consecutive Super Cup title and saw Milan equal their rivals’ eight Super Cup wins, with new manager Serge Conceicao lifting the trophy in just his second game in charge.

The match, which began with a spectacular light show at King Saud University Stadium, was quiet until the final moments of the first half. Inter took the lead when Mehdi Taremi set up Lautaro Martinez, who deftly maneuvered past Milan's Malick Thiaw before scoring a low shot through Theo Hernandez’s legs at the near post. Two minutes into the second half, Inter doubled their advantage as Taremi controlled a long ball from Stefan de Vrij and calmly slotted it into the bottom corner.

Milan responded with a series of attacking moves. After bringing on Rafael Leao, the Portuguese forward won a free kick, which Hernandez expertly curled around the wall to pull one back for Milan. The Rossoneri continued to push, with Tijjani Reijnders seeing his shot blocked by Alessandro Bastoni and Yann Sommer denying Alvaro Morata's header with a fine save. Inter had a chance to restore their two-goal lead, but Carlos Augusto's header hit the post and Milan seized their opportunity to equalize.

With the match seemingly heading for a penalty shootout, Milan’s persistence paid off in the final moments. Leao’s cross found Abraham, who tapped in from close range to complete the dramatic turnaround. Conceicao, who had replaced the sacked Paulo Fonseca just days before, celebrated wildly with his players, while Inter’s squad was left dejected after their near victory turned into heartbreak.
