Switzerland wins 2-0 against Philippines in 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup

Posted : 21 July 2023
Ramona Bachmann's late first-half penalty opened the scoring for Switzerland, and Seraina Piubel doubled their lead in the 64th minute with a close-range effort, leading them to a 2-0 victory against the Philippines in their first Women's World Cup appearance.

The Philippines had a promising start and seemed to have scored their first World Cup goal through Katrina Guillou in the 16th minute, but it was ruled out for offside.

As the match progressed, Switzerland gained momentum and took control of the game, with Geraldine Reuteler and Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic missing close-range chances.

Switzerland was finally rewarded when a video assistant referee review led to a penalty being awarded for a late challenge by Jessika Cowart, who miscalculated her clearance and fouled Coumba Sow. Ramona Bachmann, the Paris St-Germain forward, calmly converted the penalty into the bottom left corner, giving Switzerland the lead just before halftime.

In the second half, Switzerland continued to dominate, and they doubled their lead after Olivia McDaniel made a double save from Crnogorcevic and Sow. The ball eventually fell to Seraina Piubel, who easily tapped it in for the second goal.

Despite a last-minute effort and McDaniel rushing into the Swiss box, the Philippines, under coach Alen Stajcic, could not find a breakthrough and had to settle for a defeat in their debut World Cup match. With this victory, Switzerland moved to the top of Group A, edging past co-hosts New Zealand on goal difference.
