In a closely contested Women's World Cup Group G match, Sweden secured a 2-1 victory over South Africa, thanks to Amanda Ilestedt's 90th-minute winner.
The game was played under pouring rain in the New Zealand capital, and Sweden faced tough resistance from the African champions for much of the match.
South Africa took the lead early in the second half when Hildah Magaia capitalized on a rebound and scored their second-ever World Cup goal. However, Sweden responded when Fridolina Rolfo's cross deflected off a defender and found the net, leveling the score.
As the match approached its end, Amanda Ilestedt rose highest and headed in Kosovare Asllani's corner to seal a dramatic late victory for Sweden. The result put them at the top of their group, pending the outcome of Italy and Argentina's opener.
South Africa, ranked 54th, showed resilience and defensive prowess, frustrating Sweden's attempts to find the finishing touch. They displayed potential in their counter-attacks and defended well against Sweden's attacks.
Despite the loss, South Africa's coach Desiree Ellis was proud of her team's performance, highlighting their ability to handle set pieces and their overall defensive efforts.
Sweden's coach Peter Gerhardsson acknowledged the challenging nature of the match and credited their practice on set pieces as the decisive factor in securing the victory.
The win sets up an exciting clash between Sweden and Italy in their next match, while South Africa will face Argentina. The result leaves both teams with positives to build on as they progress in the tournament.
