The Super Falcons of Nigeria began their 9th campaign in the 2023 Women World Cup in New Zealand and Australia with an enthralling stalemated 0-0 match against Canada in a match played at the late hours of Thursday, Nigerian time.
Africa Sport Network (ASN) reports that the Randy Waldrum-tutored side battled through the 0-0 scoreline with 10 players after Deborah Ajibola Abiodun was shown a straight red card in the latter stages of the game, after a careless tackle on Canadian player.
It was a thrilling moment at the iconic Triangular Melbourne Stadium, in Australia as Super Falcon's goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie's bravery between the sticks frustrated what could have been the clincher for the reigning Olympic champions, Canada when she stopped a penalty during the testy match.
The defense line of the Africa's most successful team however proved to be vital in the ongoing 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, as they battled to a hard-fought stalemated match leaving both teams with one point to share.
Nigeria showcased determination and defensive prowess against the high-ranking Canadian team, who entered the tournament as one of the favourites.
The Super Falcons, captained by FIFA Ballon D'or nominee Asisat Oshoala, had to put on brave displays from the start of the match till the final whistle despite facing an uphill task when Ajibola Abiodun had received a matching order in the latter stages of the game.
Although the match was packed with nervy scoring moments, with Canadian side played a 4-4-2 direct attacks to record an amazing 68 per cent possession with 16 shots on goal and three on target as against Nigeria's 32 per cent possession, 11 shots at goal and one on target, no goal was added to the match.
Canada’s forward line, spearheaded by the prolific Christine Sinclair and the skillful displays from Jessie Fleming remained thorn in the flesh of Nigeria's Abiodun, Demehin and Francesca Ordega as they pressed the Nigerian defense line.
However, the Super Falcons were able to withstand the onslaught especially with the heroic penalty save by Nnadozie which denied the Canadians the much-needed breakthrough.
With the scoreline ending 0-0, Nigeria and Canada remained second and third respectively while Australia sits on the summit of the table with three points.
