Naija Ratels, a team in the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL), has strengthened its squad significantly by officially introducing Onome Ebi, the captain of the Super Falcons, as their latest signing.
After concluding her stint with Spain’s Levante Les Planas last year, where she had limited opportunities and made just one appearance for the club, the experienced defender has not played any club matches since 2022. Despite featuring in five international matches with Randy Waldrum’s Super Falcons, Ebi has chosen to make a return to club football.
This return to club football takes Ebi back to the NWFL after an absence of 15 years since leaving Bayelsa Queens. At Naija Ratels, the accomplished center-back, who holds the distinction of being the first African footballer to participate in six World Cup tournaments, will proudly wear jersey number 5, embarking on a new chapter in her football career.
Throughout her football career, Ebi has showcased her skill on the field while representing clubs in various countries such as Sweden, Turkey, Belarus, China, and Spain. Her wealth of experience and strong leadership qualities are anticipated to make a significant impact on the Naija Ratels team.
As an esteemed member of Nigeria’s Super Falcons, Onome Ebi has an impressive record of 109 international caps and three goals. In an Instagram post, Ebi shared her motivation for joining Naija Ratels, stating that it goes beyond playing football.
“My decision to join Naija Ratels goes beyond football. It’s about inspiring young, aspiring female players from the grassroots, encouraging them to think and believe that, just like I did, they can make history even in an environment where, more often than not, a woman has to put in twice as much effort as a man to achieve success.
“I strongly feel that my story won't be complete if I don't achieve the goal of giving back to the Nigerian league, which played a crucial role in nurturing me into a star. It wasn't an easy decision because I had lucrative offers, but I believe Nigeria needs me right now,” she wrote.
With Ebi’s arrival at Naija Ratels, her presence is expected to inspire and uplift her fellow players as they gear up for the upcoming NWFL campaign.
