The Super Eagles of Nigeria are expected to receive a sum of $7 million (N8.9 billion) as prize money if they emerge victorious in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d'Ivoire.
Nigeria secured a spot in the final by defeating South Africa's Bafana Bafana 4-2 in a penalty shootout after an intense 120 minutes of football, concluding in a 1-1 draw at the Stade de la Paix, Bouaké, on Wednesday.
The two finalists, Nigeria and hosts Cote d'Ivoire, have already earned $4 million each for reaching the final, setting the stage for their highly anticipated clash on Sunday.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) had previously announced a 40% increase in prize money before the tournament began.
According to CAF, the winners of the tournament will receive $7 million, which is $2 million more than the prize money awarded in the previous edition held in Cameroon.
The AFCON runners-up will now receive $4 million (N5 billion), while the losing semi-finalists, South Africa and DR Congo, will each take home $2.5 million, and the four quarter-finalists will receive $1.3 million each.
CAF President Motsepe emphasized the significant progress made in the past two years to increase the prize money for AFCON and other major competitions. He expressed confidence that a portion of the prize money would contribute to football development, benefit football stakeholders, and assist Member Associations in their administrations.
