Super Eagles star named in Alan Shearer's Premier League TOTW

English Premier League icon Alan Shearer has included Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey in his Premier League Team of the Week, recognizing the Nigerian’s standout performance in Fulham's 3-2 triumph over Liverpool on Sunday.


Fulham shocked the league leaders at Craven Cottage with a determined display. Despite conceding early to a goal from Alexis Mac Allister in the 14th minute, the Cottagers responded impressively with three quick goals from Ryan Sessegnon, Alex Iwobi, and Rodrigo Muniz. The hosts held their ground as Liverpool pushed for an equalizer, but managed to restrict the Reds to just one more goal in the second half.


Calvin Bassey played a crucial role in Fulham’s defensive resilience. The 25-year-old put in a commanding performance, finishing the game with five clearances, three successful tackles, an impressive 90% pass completion rate, and winning six of his eight duels. His composure and strength at the back were vital to Fulham securing all three points.


Earlier in the week, Bassey had already earned a spot in the official Premier League Team of the Week. Now, Shearer—who holds the record for most goals in Premier League history—has also acknowledged his efforts by selecting him in his personal Team of the Week lineup.


Other names that made Shearer’s list include Dean Henderson, Tino Livramento, Antonee Robinson, Daniel Muñoz, Jake Murphy, Morgan Rogers, Brennan Johnson, Rodrigo Muniz, Jean-Philippe Mateta, and Evanilson, reflecting the diverse standout performers from the weekend’s matches.


With this important win, Fulham climbed to eighth place on the Premier League table. They are now just five points shy of a Champions League qualification spot and three points behind the UEFA Conference League position, giving them a realistic chance to fight for European football.


As the season nears its end, Bassey will be aiming to maintain his strong form. A consistent run of performances could not only help Fulham finish in a European spot but may also open the door to interest from bigger clubs during the summer transfer window.
