Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali made an unexpected choice for the world’s best goalkeeper, opting for South Africa's Ronwen Williams over more famous names like Real Madrid’s Andriy Lunin and Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez.
Both Nwabali and Williams impressed during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) earlier this year, where Nigeria finished as runners-up, and Williams helped South Africa earn a bronze medal.
Williams’ standout performance in the tournament, particularly his five clean sheets and saving four penalties in the quarter-final win against Cape Verde, earned him widespread recognition.
Although Nwabali also recorded four clean sheets, Williams narrowly edged him out for the best goalkeeper award at AFCON, highlighting his exceptional form.
Beyond the tournament, Williams, 32, played a crucial role in Mamelodi Sundowns' league title and their victory in the inaugural African Football League, further enhancing his reputation.
His impressive year saw him nominated for the Yashin Trophy at the Ballon d'Or alongside big names such as Diogo Costa, Gianluigi Donnarumma, and Emiliano Martinez.
Nwabali praised Williams’ consistency, stating he views him as the best goalkeeper in the world, both for his international and club achievements, and aims to carry his own strong form into Nigeria's AFCON qualifiers against Libya in October.
