Super Eagles prospect scores as Newcastle beats Arsenal, reaches final

Posted : 06 February 2025

In a thrilling Carabao Cup semifinal second leg, Newcastle United secured a dominant 2-0 victory over Arsenal, clinching a 4-0 aggregate win. The standout performer was Jacob Murphy, a former England U21 international of Nigerian heritage, who played a key role in the match.

Murphy opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a well-placed strike, converting a low shot into the net following a brilliant pass into the box. His early goal provided Newcastle with a crucial advantage, settling their nerves and making the task tougher for Arsenal.

While Murphy made his mark on the game, fellow forward Ethan Nwaneri, of Nigerian descent, also contributed significantly. Nwaneri was introduced in the 37th minute as a substitute for the injured Gabriel Martinelli. The injury to Martinelli prompted a tactical change by Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

Nwaneri brought energy to the Arsenal attack after his substitution. Despite an attempt in the 75th minute, where he latched onto a rebound, his shot was saved by Newcastle’s goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. Nevertheless, his presence was felt as he added some urgency to the Gunners' attack.

Newcastle's lead was extended early in the second half when Anthony Gordon capitalized on a mistake by Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya in the 52nd minute, making it 2-0. This goal gave the Magpies a comfortable cushion and left Arsenal struggling to get back into the game.

Despite a late surge from Arsenal, including efforts from Kai Havertz and Declan Rice, Newcastle’s defense held strong. Their resilience ensured a convincing victory, and the team advanced to the Carabao Cup final with ease.

With Murphy’s goal and Nwaneri’s involvement, both Super Eagles-eligible players played important roles in securing the win. Newcastle will now face either Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup final, set to take place on Sunday, March 16, at Wembley.
