As Nigerians eagerly anticipate the outcome of the final showdown in the ongoing 2023 AFCON championship between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and the Elephants of Cote D’Ivoire on Sunday, Super Eagles and Kasimpasa of Turkey defender, Kenneth Omeruo, is optimistic that another victory against the host nation is achievable.
Omeruo, speaking after their recovery training session at their École de police de Cocody training center, stated that victory would be assured if the team sticks to its game plan.
He acknowledged that the Ivorians are a good side that plays together as a unit but believes the Eagles will triumph against them.
“Definitely, another victory is possible; we have to stick to our game plan and remain focused because even when we beat them before, we knew they were a good team. We just have to keep to our game plan, and we will win.”
When asked if history will be kind to him and Ahmed Musa, being the only two players who have won the AFCON trophy amongst other team members, Kenneth said,
“I hope so; I pray we will win, not just for me and Ahmed but also for the young guys who have been working really hard even when the results were not going our way. Despite the bad comments on Instagram and other social media platforms, we kept it aside to work hard up to this point, and we have Nigerians on our side again.”
Having beaten the Ivorians in the group stages of the competition, many believe the pressure will be on Nigeria. However, Kenneth thinks otherwise, saying, “the pressure will be on the Ivorians to take their own pound of flesh against us, and I want to believe it will work in our favor because the pressure will not be on us; it’s on them.” He concluded.
