Super Eagles lose key player for World Cup Qualifiers

Posted : 28 February 2025

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been dealt a major setback ahead of their 2026 World Cup Qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, following confirmation from West Brom that defender Semi Ajayi has suffered another hamstring injury. This development comes at a crucial time for Nigeria as they prepare for the decisive fixtures.

With only three points from their first four qualifying matches, Nigeria faces a challenging path to securing a spot in the World Cup. Winning the upcoming games against Rwanda and Zimbabwe has become a necessity to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Despite their struggles so far, Nigeria’s coach, Eric Chelle, still has a strong squad at his disposal. However, his task may now become more complicated as he could be forced to adjust his defensive setup due to the absence of a key player.

Ajayi’s injury is particularly frustrating, as he had just returned to action two weeks ago after a four-month spell on the sidelines. Unfortunately, the 31-year-old defender is now expected to miss several weeks of action again, which means he will likely be unavailable for Nigeria’s critical matches in mid-March.

Eric Chelle has yet to manage his first game with the Super Eagles, so his tactical approach remains uncertain. Previous coaches have alternated between a back three and a back four, leaving room for speculation about how the team will be structured defensively.

Ajayi has been a key figure in Nigeria’s defensive lineup, often forming a trio with William Troost-Ekong and Calvin Bassey. In his absence, Chelle may turn to other options such as Olisa Ndah, Gabriel Osho, Kevin Akpoguma, Kenneth Omeruo, or even a defender from the Nigerian Premier Football League.

Regardless of who replaces him, Ajayi’s absence is a significant blow to the Super Eagles. His experience and leadership in defense have been crucial, and Nigeria will need to find a solid alternative to maintain stability at the back in these must-win fixtures.
