The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been on an impeccable run of form in the ongoing African Cup of Nations, with their defense proving to be immune to goals. In fact, they boast the meanest defense in AFCON 2023, having gone over 564 minutes without conceding a goal. The last goal scored against them was in the first match against Equatorial Guinea at the 36th minute by Salvador.
The Super Eagles, three-time winners of AFCON, have conceded fewer shots on goal against them. After a 1-1 stalemate against Equatorial Guinea, they secured a 1-0 victory over the host, Cote D'Ivoire, and another 1-0 win over Guinea Bissau in the last group game. They defeated perennial arch-rivals Indomitable Lions of Cameroon 2-0 in the round of 16 and financially induced Palancras Negras of Angola 1-0 in the quarterfinals.
Now, the Super Eagles have another chance to continue their dominance over resurgent South Africa, who have also performed well in the tournament. Bafana Bafana of South Africa, one-time winners of AFCON in 1996, will face the Super Eagles in the semi-final.
Despite the historical records and achievements of Nigeria in African football, the focus is on the current AFCON, where the Super Eagles have an impenetrable defense, having been breached only once in five matches. The upcoming semi-final against South Africa in Bouake positions Nigeria as the favorite, given their historical dominance in encounters.
The game will mark the 15th clash between both countries at the full international level, with Nigeria winning seven of the previous 14 matches. The Super Eagles will rely on the incredible energy of Africa Player of the Year Victor Osimhen and the intractability of wing-terrors Ademola Lookman and Moses Simon.
With an unbeaten streak in competitive matches over the past 10 months and a higher global ranking than South Africa, the Super Eagles are aiming for a fourth AFCON title. The semi-final clash is an opportunity for Nigeria to advance to the finals and potentially win the tournament for the fourth time, reinforcing its status as Africa's most successful footballing nation.
