The Super Eagles have dropped eight places to 38th in the FIFA rankings for June, released today, following the 2026 World Cup hiatus during which the team failed to secure a single win after four matches.

The Eagles' dismal performance in June's 2026 World Cup Qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic represents the latest in a series of poor results, leaving the team in 5th position in their group.

Nigeria came from behind to hold South Africa's Bafana Bafana to a 1-1 draw at home in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, and shockingly lost 1-2 to Benin Republic's Cheetahs on neutral ground in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire.

International matches during the review period, along with other factors, significantly influence the rankings, with no fewer than 187 national team matches contested since the last update.

Despite the Super Eagles' drop in the global rankings, Nigeria remains Africa's 5th best-rated team, with Morocco leading the continental rankings in 12th place globally.

Senegal, Egypt, and African champions Cote d'Ivoire occupy the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th positions respectively on the continent.

World champions Argentina hold the top spot, followed by France in 2nd place, and Belgium in 3rd, maintaining their positions in the rankings.

The next edition of the FIFA/Coca-Cola Men's World Ranking will be published on July 18, 2024.
