Leon Aderemi Balogun, a versatile defender for both Nigeria and Rangers, has acknowledged that he is open to the possibility of joining the Saudi Pro League. The 36-year-old has enjoyed more playing time with Rangers this season compared to the previous campaign, demonstrating his continued importance to Philippe Clement's team.
Balogun has contributed one goal and an assist in 19 appearances across all competitions for Rangers this season. However, his contract at Ibrox is set to expire at the end of the current season. When asked about the possibility of moving to the Saudi Pro League after his contract ends, Balogun shared that many factors beyond his control would influence his decision but emphasized that he wouldn’t dismiss a potential move to the Middle East.
"I’m not going to run away. Honestly, if I get an offer that feels right for me, and it aligns with what I need to consider for others as well, then I would definitely think about it," Balogun said. "But at the moment, it hasn’t been on the cards so far."
The former Brighton and Hove Albion player further acknowledged that money plays a significant role in these discussions. "Last year, there was a lot of excitement, and they're building something. They likely have long-term plans to make the league appealing over the next five to six years," he added in an interview with Ay Suga Naija Lifestyle. "We’ll see if I’m part of that project in Saudi Arabia."
Balogun believes the Saudi Pro League is taking a different approach by building a sustainable league that isn't meant to compete with the Premier League but aims to earn respect and recognition. He noted that while the financial aspect is undeniable, it’s a strategy he understands, and if he were in their shoes, he would take advantage of it as well.
Though Balogun's future remains uncertain, he has expressed his love for the Nigerian national team. He last played for the Super Eagles in June 2022 and has earned 46 caps since making his debut in 2014. The defender revealed that he would love to return to the Super Eagles squad as they resume their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign in March.
Nigeria will face Rwanda on March 19 before hosting Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on March 22. Balogun's potential return to the Super Eagles could provide an added boost as the team seeks to secure their place in the World Cup.
