Super Eagles GK Okoye shines at Venice Film Festival with Serie A legends

Posted : 03 September 2024

Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye recently attended the Venice Film Festival premiere of the documentary "Seydou - il sogno non ha colore" on September 2nd. This film, which addresses the issue of racism, features a notable cast of football personalities, including Serie A legends Francesco Totti, Ciro Ferrara, and Bernardo Corradi. It also includes current players like Paulo Dybala from AS Roma, Yacine Adli from Fiorentina, Lameck Banda from Lecce, Danilo Luiz Da Silva from Juventus, and Junior Messias from Genoa.

Produced by Wonder Project in collaboration with Rai Cinema and Lega Serie A, the documentary supports the league's "Keep Racism Out" campaign. It highlights Senegalese actor Seydou Sarr and various top athletes, emphasizing the importance of unity and equality in sports.

Okoye’s participation in the premiere underscores his dedication to these values, reflecting the commitment of his club, Udinese Calcio, to inclusivity and social responsibility. As the only player present at the event, Okoye expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and his support for the project's goals.

In his remarks, Okoye highlighted the significance of the documentary, stating, "I am very happy and must thank Udinese and Serie A for this opportunity. This project is very important, and I am thrilled to have participated in sending a strong message about integration and keeping racism out of sports."

He further noted, "As footballers, we must use our popularity to raise awareness on this topic. I have never had any issues of this kind in Udine; we are very happy here, and our club is multicultural. The city feels like home to me. The world of cinema fascinates me; it was wonderful to work with Seydou and his team."

Serie A's dedication to combating racism is evident through initiatives like this, which promote inclusivity, respect, and equality both on and off the field. These efforts are integral to the league’s broader mission to foster a more inclusive environment.

Lorenzo Casini, President of Lega Serie A, emphasized the importance of ongoing efforts, stating, "The fight against racism and all forms of discrimination represents one of the key objectives that Lega Serie A has been dedicated to with strength and commitment for many years. It is essential to continue these initiatives to counter an ignoble phenomenon against which much has been done, but much more remains to be achieved in terms of education and awareness."
