Super Eagles forward Tella admits frustration at Bayer Leverkusen

Super Eagles forward Nathan Tella has expressed his frustration with Bayer Leverkusen due to limited playing time this season. Tella, who joined the German Bundesliga champions in the summer of 2023 from Southampton for approximately 23 million euros, has found it challenging to secure a regular spot in the starting lineup.

During his first season with Bayer Leverkusen, Tella made a significant impact by contributing eleven goal involvements in 39 appearances across all competitions. His performances helped the club secure the Bundesliga title and the DFB-Pokal, showcasing his talent and potential on the pitch. This success earned him a call-up to the Super Eagles, where he made his debut in a World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe in November.

However, the current campaign has not been as fruitful for Tella. Despite his promising start last season, he has struggled to break into the first team, starting only one of six Bundesliga matches. His lack of game time has also resulted in his exclusion from the Super Eagles squad for the international fixtures in September and October.

Tella has addressed his concerns directly with manager Xabi Alonso, seeking clarification on his role and playing opportunities. While he expressed disappointment, he refrained from criticizing Alonso's decisions. In statements reported by German newspaper BILD, Tella acknowledged the need for patience and emphasized his commitment to proving himself when given the chance.

He stated, “It's frustrating, to be honest. But I spoke to the coach, and he assured me that I will get opportunities. When I get a chance, I have to show myself.” Tella believes he has been performing well in training and is ready to contribute when called upon, underscoring the importance of the coach's trust in his abilities.

Tella's versatility allows him to play as a second striker, forward, or attacking midfielder, although he prefers not to play as a wing-back. He noted that he had to adapt to this position during matches against VfB Stuttgart and TSG Hoffenheim, where he played in a role similar to Jeremie Frimpong.

“I’ve always said that I'm an attacker. I’m not going to lie and say that I'm a full-back,” Tella remarked. However, he recognizes the need to make sacrifices for the team. He concluded, “When I play as a full-back, I do it as well as I can. When I play further forward - which I prefer - then I also do my best.” This highlights his commitment to the team while expressing his desire to play in a more offensive position.
