Super Eagles coach, Chelle, makes surprise appearance at Mobolaji Johnson Arena

Posted : 20 February 2025

The Super Eagles Technical Adviser, Eric Chelle, made a surprise visit to Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, on Wednesday to watch the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 25 between Ikorodu City FC and Plateau United.

The Super Eagles coach arrived with Lagos State Football Association (LSFA) officials, led by Vice Chairman Oladotun Coker.

Recall that the newly appointed Chelle has opted to stay in Nigeria and promised to make watching the local league a priority. He fulfilled his promise with his first appearance at the NPFL match at Mobolaji Johnson Arena.

During the first-half break, Chelle made his way to the pitch to acknowledge the cheers from the club's supporters, and he was presented with an Ikorodu City FC replica jersey by the club's Chairman, Sanmi Doherty.

At the end of the match, Super Eagles coach Chelle described the game as a good one before being whisked away by security.

Ikorodu City FC’s coach, Aweroro, in an interview with ASN, described the visit as memorable.

“The visit of the Super Eagles coach is one of the best things that has happened to the team. Having him here is a big plus, and that’s why we needed to prove our worth on the field and do our best,” he said.

Ikorodu City FC survived a scare in the match, scoring two goals in the second half. Plateau United FC surprisingly drew first blood in the 39th minute with a tight-angle finish by Kalu Samuel from a neat pass by captain Albert Hillary.

In the second half, Ikorodu City FC’s coach, Nuruden Aweroro, made a valuable double substitution, bringing on Dada Oladimeji and Ayomide Cole for Toyeeb Ajeyigbe and Chinese Chinonso.

The Oga Boys continued to apply pressure on the visitors, Peace Boys, and it paid off in the 74th minute when a beautiful jab-in followed a sleek pass from the chief tormentor of the Peace Boys, Shola Adelani.

The Aweroro-coached team wasn’t done yet, as they scored the much-needed winning goal when Tosin slammed in a loose ball in the 80th minute.
