Super Eagles beat Palancras Negras 1-0

Posted : 02 February 2024

Atlanta FC's pacy winger, Ademola Lookman, emerged as another hero on the eventful night against the hard-fighting Palancras Negras of Angola as his lone strike sank the Angolans.

The Nigerian Super Eagles, on Friday night, soared past the Black Antelopes of Angola into the semifinals of the African Cup of Nations with a superlative performance, securing a lone goal at the Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

Playing for Atalanta FC in Italy, Ademola Lookman received a pass from the dribble run of Moses Simon on the left flank, releasing a powerful shot into Angola’s net in the 41st minute.

Lookman was also the conqueror of the Indomitable Lions with a brace in the 2-0 win that sent the Cameroonians home.

An aerial threat by Victor Osimhen with a header in the 76th minute was so powerful that the Angolan keeper parried it into his net, but VAR ruled Osimhen offside, even as the stadium roared in celebration.

Stanley Nwabili, in goal for Nigeria, was amazing, saving three goal-bound shots, marking his fourth clean sheet in this match.

Mabululu of Angola coordinated the Angolan forays into the Nigerian territory several times, but Nigeria’s stand-in captain, Troost Ekong, also directed Aina, Bassey, and Sanusi to ensure the Angolans never had time to invoke Lady Luck to be on their side.

It was a match where the Angolans dominated possession with a 55-45 ball possession advantage and better accuracy in passes, but they only managed two shots on target. They struggled with set pieces, especially corner kicks, with a ratio of 7-4, which they squandered.

Nigeria will now face the winner of the Cape Verde versus South Africa quarterfinals in the semifinals on Wednesday, 7th February, at 6 pm. The second semifinal will feature DR Congo/Guinea versus Mali/Cote D’Ivoire at 9 pm on the same day.
