Sunshine Stars zoom into 2024 President Federation Cup

Sunshine Stars FC defeated Rivers United 1-0 on Wednesday in Abuja to advance to the Quarterfinals of the President's Federation Cup.


The highly tactical game started with the Ondo State-sponsored side gaining much of the possession in the early stages, exhibiting good football artistry.


Vincent Temitope and Lucky Nwafor combined well upfront to challenge their opponents.


Lucky Nwafor, however, was the luckiest inside the vital area after receiving a pass from Vincent Temitope. He dribbled a rushing defender before calmly slotting home in the 8th minute of the game.


Rivers United pushed hard moments later in search of an equalizer, but Stars' defense remained vigilant.


In the 23rd minute, Duke Osimaga was booked for a rash challenge. Three minutes later, Vincent Temitope also received a yellow card for a bad tackle.


As Rivers United FC mounted more pressure, Sunshine Stars' defenders remained disciplined and pushed United attackers out of the vital area.


In the 28th minute, Promise Awosanmi had a chance at the edge of the box, but his effort was just too high.


Also, in the 35th minute, David Ariyo's name was recorded as he received a yellow card for time wasting.


Mafeng Pam was booked in the 49th minute for being too aggressive on a Rivers United midfielder.


However, the first 45 minutes ended 1-0 in favor of Sunshine Stars FC.


Upon resumption into the second half, Rivers United improved upfront as they increased their shots on target following set pieces.


Rivers United had three shots on target in quick succession, but Psalmsit Ariyo had no issues with any of them.


Kingsley Ogunmola was thrown into the pitch by Kennedy Boboye in the 58th minute, replacing the injured goal scorer, Lucky Nwafor.


Rivers United was awarded a penalty kick in the 71st minute when Andy Opke was brought down in the vital area.


David Ariyo dived in the right direction to save.


Again, Psalmsit rose higher in the 87th minute to punch a ball at the edge of the post, denying Rivers United an equalizer.


The match eventually ended 1-0 in favor of Sunshine Stars FC.


With the one-nil victory over Rivers United, Sunshine Stars FC advances to the Quarterfinals of the President's Federation Cup.
