2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 33: Sunshine Stars seek refuge in Ijebu Ode as Enyimba International seeks stability

Posted : 13 April 2025

Sunshine Stars FC of Akure will play under their newly rejigged management for the first time in the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 33.

The match against the nine-time league champions, Enyimba International FC, will offer Sunshine Stars an opportunity to reignite their fight against relegation, facing the Peoples Elephant, a team also eyeing a possible continental spot.

Having relocated from the Akure Township Stadium, the Owena Whales have made the Dipo Dino Stadium in Ijebu Ode their adopted home for the season. Unfortunately, they are winless in their last game. The club’s management was overhauled during the week, following the Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa's, appointment of a caretaker committee to oversee their affairs.

The dismissal of the previous board was attributed to the club’s poor performance, which now places the new management in a challenging position to save the team from relegation.

Sunshine Stars' campaign has been disappointing, winning only nine matches and conceding the most goals in the league (45). This has left them in 19th position with just 35 points, four points away from safety.

To retain their top-flight status, they must win all of their remaining six matches, starting with the tough encounter against Stanley Eguma’s Enyimba. Anything less would require them to rely on the misfortune of other teams above the relegation zone.

The challenge of defeating Enyimba is compounded by Sunshine Stars' poor home form, which has seen them win only two of their last five home matches.

Despite their managerial crisis and inconsistent performances this season, Enyimba, currently on 46 points after 32 games, are only four points behind the third spot, which is being contested by five other teams. A win in Ijebu Ode would see them stay one point behind third place, while it would significantly damage Sunshine Stars' hopes of avoiding relegation.
