Posted : 06 June 2023
The Sunshine Stars FC of Akure gaffer, Edith Agoye, on Tuesday, said that picking up a point against unbeaten Bendel Insurance FC in the Match Day 2 of the ongoing Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Super 6 playoff, is better than a loss.

Agoye who feels happy with the draw said all hope was not lost as the Akure Gunners seek continental football.

Africa Sport Network  (ASN) reports that Ekerette Udom nets his 4th league goal as Sunshine stars drew one all with Bendel Insurance in Lagos.

The last match of Match Day 2 of the super 6 playoffs started tactically with both sides, but it was Bendel Insurance that had the opening goal in the 9th minute of the first half through Divine Nwachukwu.

Bendel insurance's confidence grew immediately and pressure mounted at Sunshine Stars' half, but the trio of Udom Ekerette, Emmanuel Ogbuagu and Imo Ikemdinachi blocked onslaughts from the opponent creditably well.

In the 38th minute, Agoye introduced two players, an attacker and a defender, as Ejike Uzoechi replaced Emmanuel Ogbuagu, while Samson Olasupo replaced Yusuf Ibrahim who sustained a minor injury.

Sunshine stars tried to get an equalizer which never came as the first half ended 1-0.

On resumption into the second half, Agoye injected another fresh leg into his team, as Stephen Chukwude replaced Pam Mafeng in the 47th minute.

Sunshine Stars eventually got the much-desired goal eventually in the 62nd minute, as Ekerette Udom dashed inside Bendel insurance's vital area as his touch rolled past the goal line in a scramble.

Sunshine Stars' exhibition of good football artistry started moments after the equalizer with lovely passes from the midfield to the attack, but there was no clear-cut chance created.

In the 78th minute, Promise Awosanmi and Oge Emmanuel were both introduced as they replaced Captain Vincent Temitope and another skilled attacker, David Onovo.

Promise Awosanmi had a chance to score a second for Sunshine Stars in the 80th minute, but miscued as his effort was calmly saved by Insurance's goalkeeper.

Agoye, assessing the match, commended his players for putting up a good fight, urging them to keep the hope alive.

"A point is better than losing, Bendel Insurance is a very good side, but I believe the job isn't done yet, we keep pushing until we achieve our set targets," he said.

With the result, Sunshine Stars occupies the 5th position on the log with a point from two matches.

Sunshine Stars' next match is a derby against Remo stars on Wednesday.
