Sunshine Stars FC of Akure will lock horns with Rivers United on Sunday in a rescheduled matchday 27 encounter at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure.
The Akure Gunners have been in a poor run of form, currently occupying the 18th position on the league table, while the visitors, Rivers United, are in 11th place.
The Kennedy Boboye-tutored side has been winless in five consecutive matches, conceding seven goals and scoring only two, one against Bayelsa United and one against Enyimba of Aba, both in their home matches in Akure.
Rivers United, on the other hand, have won two of their last five matches, losing two and drawing one in their last match against Kwara United in Ilorin. They have scored a total of six goals while conceding four.
The Kennedy Boboye-tutored side is expected to give their all on the pitch on Sunday to earn maximum points against the visitors as Sunshine Stars continues to push away from the danger zone.
The Akure landlords will be banking on the recent motivation from the Honorable Commissioner of Sports, Youth Development, and Sports in Ondo State, Saka Yusuf Ogunleye, who announced an immediate increase in the remuneration of the players and coaches ahead of the tie.
It is on record that both Sunshine Stars and Rivers United have played 17 competitive matches starting from 2016 till date. Sunshine Stars has won six times, while Rivers United has won four times. Seven fixtures between Sunshine Stars and Rivers United have ended in a draw.
The last time Sunshine Stars played against Rivers United was on November 5th, 2023, at the Garden City in Port Harcourt. Young Oyowah scored a 90+5-minute goal to equalize for Rivers United after Duke Osimaga had given Sunshine Stars the lead with a stunner in the 52nd minute.
In 17 matches between both sides, Sunshine Stars have scored 12 goals while Rivers United have scored nine.
Matches between the two sides have also produced 22 yellow cards, with Sunshine Stars receiving 15 and Rivers United receiving seven.
A win for Sunshine Stars tomorrow will brighten their chances of escaping relegation in the 4 p.m. kickoff time.
