Mamelodi Sundowns kicked off their CAF Women's Champions League campaign in spectacular fashion, securing a well-earned 2-0 victory against the tournament debutants, JKT Queens, on Sunday. In a clash that showcased their prowess, the South African powerhouse demonstrated their experience and skill, leaving a lasting impact on the Stade Amadou Gon Coulibaly.
Lebogang Ramalepe took center stage in the second half, igniting the scoreboard as she unleashed a brilliant strike that found the back of the net on the 41st minute. JKT Queens, though newcomers, displayed resilience before the halftime whistle, preventing further damage. However, the Pretoria club maintained their grip on the game, ensuring a thrilling contest.
The game's defining moment arrived when Refilwe Tholakele showcased her precision by clinically outmaneuvering goalkeeper Najat Abass Idrissa on the 75th minute. Ramalepe, who earned the title of the player of the match, expressed her satisfaction, saying, "We are delighted with our performance and to start with a win which boosts confidence."
This triumph adds to Sundowns' impressive record against East African opponents in CAF meetings, following previous victories over Kenya's Vihiga Queens and TP Mazembe from DR Congo. JKT Queens' coach, Esther Fredy Chaburuma, acknowledged that key moments didn't fall in favor of her youthful Tanzanian team during their Champions League debut. She attributed the outcome to the difference in experience and noted some rookie mistakes.
Despite the challenges, Chaburuma sees this experience as a valuable lesson for her team. She believes that testing themselves against the continent's elite in Cote d'Ivoire will contribute to their growth. Next, the Queens brace themselves for a formidable encounter with Athletico Abidjan, aiming for a swift resurgence. Meanwhile, Sundowns shift their focus towards securing the top spot in the group as they prepare to face Sporting Club de Casablanca in their next fixture.
