Sunday Oliseh identifies similarities in Ndidi but favors Chelsea's Kante
Posted : 28 April 2023
Sunday Oliseh, a former Super Eagles star, holds deep admiration for the skills and abilities of Wilfred Ndidi, the talented midfielder from Leicester City.
However, Oliseh acknowledges that there are specific scenarios where he would favor the tactics employed by Ngolo Kante, another prominent player in the same position.
During Oliseh's tenure as coach, Ndidi received his first call-up to the Super Eagles squad in 2015, and since then, he has represented Nigeria on 47 occasions at the international level.
Oliseh emphasizes that his appreciation for Ndidi's game stems not from the fact that he provided him with an initial opportunity, but rather because he recognizes similarities between himself and the Nigerian midfielder.
Having played as a defensive midfielder himself, Oliseh developed a reputation for excelling in his role, prioritizing ball retention and precise passing. In observing Ndidi, Oliseh recognizes the implementation of a similar approach in both Leicester City's midfield and the Super Eagles' midfield, which has significantly contributed to the team's overall balance and performance.
When asked about the player in the current Super Eagles squad who closely aligns with his own playing style, Oliseh expressed his admiration during an episode of the ATHLST podcast.
He stated, "I enjoy watching Wilfred Ndidi play, not because I provided him with his first national call-up, not at all. But I appreciate his style of play because one of the key aspects of being a defensive midfielder or playing in the goalkeeper or central defense positions is the need to work for the team. A goalkeeper doesn't have the luxury of showcasing individual skills but must focus on correcting others' errors."
Oliseh further highlights the selflessness required of defensive midfielders, as they consistently play a role in rescuing and supporting their teammates.
He believes that individuals occupying this position must possess a genuine sense of altruism to excel in their duties.
As Sunday Oliseh relishes watching Wilfred Ndidi in action, he not only appreciates the talent and technical abilities but also acknowledges the crucial role defensive midfielders play in preserving team cohesion and success.
To this, he said: "The most difficult part of that job [Defensive Midfielder] Kante does it better".
