Steven Gerrard extends contract with Al Ettifaq until 2027 amidst performance challenges

Posted : 19 January 2024

Former Rangers and Aston Villa manager, Steven Gerrard, has extended his contract as head coach of Saudi Pro League club Al Ettifaq until 2027. The 43-year-old's contract extension follows a period of mixed results, where Al Ettifaq experienced an impressive start, winning five of their first seven matches, but subsequently entered a slump in form, failing to secure a victory since October 28.

Gerrard expressed his satisfaction with the contract extension, seeing it as recognition for the hard work and commitment put into the role. He acknowledged the challenges faced when he initially took on the job, involving the implementation of new infrastructure, such as the construction of a new training ground and stadium. Despite the difficulties, significant progress has been made.

The Saudi club's recent poor run of form has positioned them in eighth place on the Saudi Pro League table, trailing 28 points behind league leaders Al Hilal. Gerrard recognizes the competitive nature of football, emphasizing the need for results. He remains confident in the team's potential for improvement, and during the open transfer window, efforts are being made to identify players who can enhance the team's competitiveness.

Gerrard's coaching journey includes leading Rangers to the Scottish Premier League title in 2021. Subsequently, he took charge of Aston Villa but faced challenges, resulting in his departure in October 2022. Despite the option to wait for job opportunities in Liverpool, Gerrard and his family opted for a different path. He values the experiences gained from adapting to a new culture, league, and challenges, seeing them as contributing factors to his personal and professional growth.
