Stellenbosch's first away game in African club competition will be played in South Africa due to their Eswatini opponents lacking an approved home ground. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has banned over 20 countries, including Eswatini, from hosting international matches at their own stadiums because their facilities did not meet the required standards.
As a result, Nsingizini Hotspurs, who will face Stellenbosch in the first round of the African Confederation Cup, will host the first leg of their match at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday, August 17, with kickoff at 3 pm. Stellenbosch will then host the return leg a week later on August 24, but their initial choice, Danie Craven Stadium, did not receive CAF approval.
The club is now aiming to use Athlone Stadium in Cape Town for the second leg, pending CAF inspection and approval. If Athlone Stadium does not meet the requirements, Stellenbosch may have to play at Cape Town Stadium, the nearest venue already approved by CAF.
Both Stellenbosch and Nsingizini Hotspurs are debuting in African club competitions this season. Stellenbosch qualified by finishing third in the South African league last season, while Hotspurs were runners-up in Eswatini. The winner of this tie will advance to the second round in September to face AS Vita Club from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
