The Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has taken a significant step by releasing the names of qualified athletes for the upcoming Paris Olympics. In a recent announcement, Amaka Ashiofu, the Acting Director of Federation, Elites, and Athletes Development (FEAD), disclosed this information during a meeting held in Abuja with various sports federations. The list encompasses a diverse range of sports, totaling 23, including athletics, boxing, cycling, swimming, table tennis, tennis, triathlon, and wrestling, among others.
Nigeria is gearing up to compete in the African Games, where they will participate in 23 sports. Ashiofu underlined the openness of the African Games, emphasizing the nation's readiness to engage in a wide array of sports. Additionally, three demonstration sports—mixed martial arts, scrabble, and teqball—will be showcased by Nigerian athletes. The commitment to showcasing a broad spectrum of sports demonstrates Nigeria's dedication to fostering a robust sporting culture.
Preparations for the Paris Olympics are also in full swing, with Nigeria intending to compete in 12 sports. The selected disciplines include athletics, boxing, canoeing, wrestling, basketball (women), badminton, football (women), rowing, swimming, taekwondo, table tennis, and weightlifting. Ashiofu highlighted the qualification of three athletes in athletics and three boxers, while affirming ongoing efforts to secure more qualifications for the Olympics. The Ministry is striving to ensure a podium finish and is actively supporting athletes as they prepare for the global sporting event.
