Sporting Lisbon has parted ways with coach Joao Pereira, just over a month after he succeeded Ruben Amorim. Pereira's departure comes after a dip in form for the team, despite his appointment following Amorim's move to Manchester United. Rui Borges has been named the new head coach, taking over on Thursday.
Pereira's tenure was marked by disappointing results, including a 0-0 draw with Gil Vicente that saw Sporting lose their top spot in the Primeira Liga to Benfica. Before his arrival, the club had maintained a perfect record in the league. Additionally, Pereira struggled in his first four matches in both the Premier League and Champions League, failing to secure any wins.
Rui Borges, the 43-year-old former coach of Vitoria Guimaraes, replaces Pereira at Sporting. Borges led Vitoria Guimaraes to a sixth-place finish in the league and a remarkable second-place finish in the group stage of the UEFA Conference League. He now faces the challenge of restoring Sporting's form and bringing stability to the team.
