Posted : 07 November 2023
Sporting Lagos FC secured an emphatic 3-0 victory over visiting Kano Pillars FC in a one-sided match on Match Day 7 of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) held at Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos on Monday.

The veteran striker, Junior Lokosa, who now plays for Sporting Lagos FC, played a pivotal role in the victory with a brace, scoring in the 12th and 36th minutes. His strike partner, Jonathan Alukwu, added another goal in the 29th minute to complete the rout against Kano Pillars, also known as Sai Masu Gida.

Lokosa, a former Kano Pillars player and the league's highest goal scorer, described his brace against his former club as an emotional moment. In an exclusive interview during the 2023/2024 NPFL Match Day 7, he emphasized that although his primary role on the pitch is to score goals, it was a unique experience to score against a team where he began his career.

During his time with Kano Pillars, Lokosa was awarded the 2018 Eunisell Boot Award after netting 19 goals in a single season. Reflecting on his brace against his former team in a one-sided match, he expressed mixed emotions, acknowledging the impact that Kano Pillars had on his career.

“It's true that in every match I want to score, but upon seeing my former team, Kano Pillars, I have to respect them, so, at some point, I was trying to study the game.

“First of all, scoring goals makes me happy, but putting two goals past Kano Pillars is another feeling, the name I have today is from them, so it's emotional for me, I feel pained, but this is my job I just have to do it.

“I really appreciate the support of the fans who gets behind me, Lagos fans are fantastic, they support us well especially the fans at the happy corner.

“In our next game, anything can happen, I believe going to Nasarawa we will have a good outing over there,'' he said.

He also appreciated the support of the fans, particularly those at the "happy corner" of the stadium, and looked forward to their upcoming game against Nasarawa, expressing optimism for a successful outing.

Lokosa's teammate, Jonathan Alukwu, also expressed satisfaction with the 3-0 scoreline and highlighted the importance of maintaining a clean sheet in their victory.

This win on NPFL Match Day 7 places Sporting Lagos FC in the sixth position on the 2023/2024 NPFL table, with their next game set to be an away fixture against Lobi Stars FC of Makurdi.
