Sporting Lagos FC reveals future ambition in lower league

Posted : 31 August 2024

Sporting Lagos FC, recently relegated to the Nigeria National League (NNL), has unveiled its future plans in response to its new status in the lower league. After a challenging season in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), the club, affectionately known as the Noisy Lagosians, found themselves demoted. The relegation marked the end of their brief stint in the top tier, but the club's management is determined to use this setback as an opportunity for growth and development.

In a recent stakeholders' meeting, held with the club’s founding members, staff, and supporters, Sporting Lagos FC shared comprehensive details about its short-term and long-term strategies. The gathering was an opportunity for the club to outline its vision and goals moving forward. The Tech Boys emphasized their commitment to building a lasting legacy through excellence both on and off the pitch. The discussions covered a wide range of topics, including future plans for the club’s infrastructure, player movements, and coaching strategies.

Club executives Shola and Ekene addressed the concerns and aspirations of the attendees. They spoke about the club’s mission to establish a strong foundation and ensure sustainable success. The meeting also touched on recent challenges, such as the club’s relegation and the need for changes within the coaching staff. Attendees were keen to learn about upcoming changes, including the introduction of new players and improvements to the sporting facilities.

One of the key highlights of the meeting was the discussion about the club’s academy. The management praised the academy’s achievements, notably the recent call-up of Edward Ochigbo to represent Nigeria at the Ghana 2024 WAFU Zone B U-17 Qualifiers. Additionally, Sporting Lagos FC's success at the Gothia Cup in Sweden in July was celebrated. The club reiterated its commitment to nurturing young talent and building a pipeline for future stars of Nigerian football.

The club also bid farewell to several players whose contracts had expired. In their statement, Sporting Lagos FC expressed their best wishes for these players' future careers. Looking ahead, the club is focused on securing talented young players aged 23 and under on long-term contracts. This strategy aims to strengthen the squad and ensure a bright future for the team. The club is actively searching for new talent and will announce signings once deals are finalized.

As Sporting Lagos FC prepares for the upcoming season in the Nigeria National League, the club is eagerly awaiting confirmation of the start date and fixture list. The management is optimistic about a strong campaign and a swift return to the NPFL. The club's supporters are excited about the new season and hopeful that the team will make a quick comeback to the top flight.

The meeting also addressed the situation with the controversial sports facility. Originally intended to be the venue for the club's home games next season, the arena's location along the coastal road has led to uncertainty. Construction was progressing well, but the club is now exploring alternative options for a new home ground. Sporting Lagos FC is committed to finding a suitable solution and will keep fans informed about the plans for their future home.

In terms of coaching, the club made the difficult decision to part ways with Coach Paul mid-season. Although challenging, this decision was made to prioritize the club's safety in the NPFL during a period of uncertainty. Coach Biffo's short-term contract concluded at the end of the NPFL season, and the club thanked him for his contributions. Sporting Lagos FC is currently evaluating options for a new long-term head coach to guide the team in the upcoming season.
