Sporting Lagos FC picks another away point against Abia Warriors

Posted : 07 December 2023

The Erasmus Onuh-led Abia Warriors on Wednesday squandered a glorious chance to beat Sporting Lagos FC in Umuahia as both teams settled for a one-goal apiece draw in the mid-week fixtures of Match 12 of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

The testy match at the Umuahia Township Stadium saw the visitors draw first blood early in the 18th minute.

Abia Warriors were caught out by a well-executed through ball, while Akpesiri Naibe, who started ahead of Junior Lokosa, calmly slotted the ball home to give the Tech Boys the deserving lead.

The Paul Offor-tutored side had earlier missed a begging chance in the 16th minute as Odafi Emmanuel lifted the ball over the Abia Warriors defense, and Godwin Alukwu beat his man in the footrace; however, the outrushing Abia Warriors goalkeeper did enough to force the chance just wide.

The host Abia Warriors then tried to pull the trigger from outside the box, but Sporting Lagos FC's goalie, Christian, made a great save to deny them an equalizer.

Sporting Lagos FC Coach Offor, at the 70th minute, made some technical changes with the introduction of the trio of Vincent Akpikpi, Ozaveshe Balogun, and Junior Lokosa, who came in to replace Chisom Orji, Anthony Nnamdi, and Odafi Emmanuel.

The host, Abia Warriors, continued to put everything into attacking the visitors, Sporting Lagos FC, and were eventually rewarded with an 84th-minute goal from substitute Paschal Nwabueze, equalizing from a corner after he pounced on a loose ball to make the score 1-1.

Abia Warriors FC would have doubled the lead in the second minute of added time as Paschal Nwabueze found the back of the net but was deservedly ruled offside.

The battle at the Umuahia Township Stadium, however, ended in a 1-1 draw.
