Spanish President Rubiales to resign amid FIFA disciplinary proceedings

Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) President Luis Rubiales plans to resign following FIFA's initiation of disciplinary proceedings against him due to his controversial actions after Spain's World Cup victory. Rubiales was seen forcibly kissing player Jenni Hermoso and engaging in other inappropriate behavior, leading to widespread outrage and demands for his resignation.
Pressure mounted as government ministers, including acting prime minister Pedro Sánchez and second deputy prime minister Yolanda Díaz, called for Rubiales to step down. FIFA's disciplinary proceedings and Hermoso's statement further intensified the calls for accountability.
Rubiales' actions were condemned not only within Spain but also internationally, with United States forward Megan Rapinoe expressing concerns about misogyny and sexism within the federation.
The RFEF held a crisis meeting to discuss Rubiales' future and potential successors. Pedro Rocha and Pablo Lozano emerged as favorites for the role.
Rubiales' presidency, marked by controversies, included the dismissal of Spain coach Julen Lopetegui just before the 2018 World Cup. He also faced criticism for taking the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia and allegations of misusing RFEF funds for personal expenses.
His tenure was further marred by allegations of spying on the president of the Spanish Footballers Association (AFE), and a crisis within the women's national team due to lack of support and coaching issues.
Rubiales' resignation marks the end of a tumultuous period for the RFEF, leaving the organization seeking stability and a new direction under new leadership.
