In a remarkable turn of events, the Spanish national team, known as La Roja, dominated their Euro qualifying match against Georgia, securing a resounding 1-7 victory and elevating themselves to the second spot in Group 1. This commanding win came after Spain's unexpected defeat to Scotland in their previous Euro qualifiers. With this triumph, La Roja now holds a six-point lead over the first-placed Scots, albeit with one fewer game played.
The history books were rewritten during this match when Lamine Yamal, the emerging talent from Barcelona, made history as the youngest player to debut for the Spanish national team at the astonishing age of 16 years and 57 days. He entered the game as a substitute in the 44th minute, replacing Dani Olmo, when Spain was already ahead 0-4. Not only did Yamal secure this record, but he also went on to become the youngest goal scorer in Spanish history by netting the seventh goal.
Yamal's historic debut surpassed the previous record held by another Barcelona player, Gavi, who made his debut at 17 years and 62 days and became the youngest goal scorer for La Roja at 17 years and 304 days. Yamal's achievement also extends beyond Spanish football, as he is now the third-youngest goal scorer in European football history and the youngest in the last 117 years, following in the footsteps of Sam Johnston of Northern Ireland in 1882 and Josef Horvath of Hungary in 1906.
The match saw Alvaro Morata opening the scoring for Spain in the 22nd minute, followed by an own goal by Solomon Kabirkablia. Dani Olmo (38') and Morata (40') added to the score, giving Spain a dream first half. Although Fabian Ruiz had a goal disallowed for offside in the 38th minute, the Spanish onslaught continued.
Georgia managed to score a goal through Gyorgy Chakvetadze four minutes into the second half, but it was a mere consolation as Spain continued to dominate. Morata completed his remarkable five-goal haul in the 66th minute, with Nico Williams adding a sixth just two minutes later. The highlight of the match was Lamin Yamal's debut goal in the 74th minute, assisted by Williams, showcasing his talent at the tender age of 16.
Yamal's rapid ascent to the Spanish national team was driven by the desire to secure his allegiance ahead of other national teams, including Morocco (his father's homeland) and Equatorial Guinea (his mother's homeland). This 16-year-old prodigy made his Barcelona debut at the age of 15 and has already established himself as a prominent player this season.
His remarkable performances have prompted Barcelona to consider extending his contract until 2026, with reports suggesting a release clause of a staggering one billion euros. Lamin Yamal is undoubtedly one of the future stars of Spanish and global football, as his incredible debut goal demonstrated once again.
